BROWNIES ATTEMPT RECORD BREAKER!!

Over 1600 Brownies took over the Glades Shopping Centre, Bromley in an attempt to break the official Guinness World Record for the largest sleepover/pyjama party under one roof.
Organised by Girlguiding Greater London Kent and hosted by the Glades Shopping Centre, Bromley, the GLK Giant Sleepover saw Brownies, Guides and their leaders from all over the London Boroughs of Bromley and Bexley arrive at the centre in their pyjamas prepared for this unique attempt with sleeping bags, blankets, pillows and snack boxes.

They are used to sleeping under the stars in tents, but the GLK decided to do something a bit different for the girls involved in the local Guiding units to experience, and to see if they can become World Record Holders!

Brownies, Guides, Senior Section Members, Guiders and members of the Trefoil Guild took part in the event with an age range from 7 years to over 70 years!

The current World record held is set at 1045 participants at a church in Virginia, USA.

In order to break this, all participants had to stay on the malls for a minimum of 12 hours and for 5 of those hours they should be asleep.

The Glades was chosen due the amount of space available. At 441,000 square feet it is one of the only venues in Bromley big enough to hold such an event.

Two very special guests were on hand affiliate the event. The Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Pauline Tunnicliffe and her daughter Amelia and Deputy Mayor of Bexley, Nick O’Hare and his wife Maria were on site to confirm all attendees and meet individual brownie groups.

Entertainers were on hand to keep the children amused on the malls with a variety of circus skills, monocycle manoeuvres and clown antics. They were given activity sheets to pass the time and keep them busy, as well as some traditional guiding activities like singing and story telling.

The event has been organised and run by volunteers: a small committee of eight plus many adults involved in Guiding throughout the Guide County of Greater London Kent (GLK), with Glades management and security staff on hand throughout the night to ensure the area was kept safe, secure and clean.

When asked if they were looking forward to the event Lauren, 7 from Bromley Brownies commented “Yes, I’ve been waiting for tonight since I found out I was lucky enough to take part, I can’t wait to get my sleeping bag out and watch the street entertainers, I’m not sure how much sleep I’ll get though with all my friends.”

We were delighted with the response of the event organised by the GLK, it was quite a sight to see all the participants turn up and the excited atmosphere was a real experience. The Glades is a focal point of the local community and we were pleased to host this World Record Attempt!” - MARIA COOPER, Marketing Manager, The Glades.
